Juliet Promnitz

"I am fascinated by contrast, the darkness versus the light- the busy against the quiet, the loud and the subtle - the use of pattern and line" Juliet Promnitz’s current body of work is inspired by a desire for quiet and minimalist design and process. She is inspired by contemporary art and design, and the long traditions of African design, patterns and bold use of line and mark making.

Her work is slab-built stoneware ceramics. Both her functional and decorative vessels are hand built and finished with slips, glazes, and underglazes. The mark making is a combination of underglaze painting, line work and sgrafitto. The strong graphic quality of her work is achieved with careful use of materials, incising lines with needle tools and hand tooled brushes. Some of Promnitz’s pieces have additions of metal leaf and gold lustre.

Her sculptural pieces reference folk art, and are whimsical depictions of the human and animal form. She enjoys simplifying and whittling down figures to their basic elements. Often humorous, and always full of detail, they all tell a tale.

Born in South Africa, Juliet Promnitz hails from a long line of artists, and has been playing with clay for more than a decade. Her previous life as a quilter continues to influence her use of patterns and compositions. She works out of her studio in Guelph,  Ontario.

Juliet’s work is available for instore purchase only.
